Definition

A playable ad is an interactive advertising creative that lets a viewer try a short, bounded experience before choosing the call to action. It is usually implemented with web technologies and may communicate with an in-app host through an interface such as MRAID.

What the viewer experiences

  1. The creative loads inside an ad container.
  2. An opening frame and instruction establish the immediate objective.
  3. The viewer performs one or more taps, drags, swipes, choices, or timed actions.
  4. The creative responds with progress, success, failure, or a short payoff.
  5. A CTA offers the agreed next step, usually the app-store destination.

A playable is not the whole game

It should represent a clear promise or mechanic without pretending to be a complete demo build. The strongest scope is often one understandable action and one satisfying outcome. A playable may use simplified states or an experimental fantasy, but material differences from the real game should be deliberate and approved.

When the format fits

  • The game's appeal can be expressed through a short action.
  • The team has a specific creative hypothesis that benefits from participation.
  • Production assets and rights are available or can be scoped.
  • The media plan includes destinations that currently accept the format.
  • The campaign owner can join creative IDs to measured outcomes and downstream quality.

When another format may fit better

  • The promise depends on story, personality, live action, or editing more than interaction.
  • A meaningful action needs a long tutorial or account state.
  • Assets, rights, time, or technical access cannot support a stable build.
  • The intended placement does not accept the required package.
  • The team has no decision the test could change.

A responsible first test

Choose one owned game moment, make one master, define a small controlled variant set, package for named destinations, and preserve a test matrix. Measure the playable as its own creative and inspect install quality rather than optimizing only for interaction inside the ad.
